Annual Meeting Information

2003 ANNUAL MEETING IN ANN ARBOR, MI

TRANSPORTATION

By car: Ann Arbor is located approximately 50 miles west of Detroit on highway I-94 near the junction with US Route 23. Campus, city and regional maps may be found on the University of Michigan web site. The nearest parking structure is across Fletcher Street, approximately a half block north of The League. Rates at the time of this writing are $8 per day. Refer to the campus map for this and additional parking structures. In general, parking on campus is hard to find and expensive.

By air: The nearest airport is Detroit Metropolitan, located midway between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Shuttle service from the airport to Ann Arbor is currently in flux due to local political problems. At the present time there are several competing shuttles.

Note: As of May 27, the dispute between airport authorities and the shuttle and bus services have still not been resolved. An additional and cheaper shuttle between the airport and Ann Arbor is:

  • Yellow Cab Select Service (tollfree 866-663-8898) runs a van for $24 one way. THEY REQUIRE TWO DAY ADVANCE NOTICE. The estimated travel time is 90 minutes from pickup time to arrival, though it will usually take less.
  • Ann Arbor Metro (734-507-9220) charges $22 per person in a shared van or $32 for 2-4 in a taxi.
  • Ann Arbor Shuttle Service (734-394-1665) charges $22 per person or $35 for 2 going to the same destination.
  • Ken's Airport Shuttle Service (734-941-7777) charges $46 for 1-4 people. Make reservations in advance; a credit card will hold your reservation.
  • Metro Connection (call Sam at 888-706-8080, or Raj at 734-347-4007) charges $39 for 1-4 people. You must reserve in advance and in addition call from the baggage area for service.
  • Select Ride (734-663-5959 or 888-663-5959) charges $61.40, including tip for up to 3 passengers.
  • Tony's Taxi and Airport Service (734-474- 9881) charges $35 per car.

All shuttle services must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance; longer is preferable since each has a limited number of vehicles.

Taxi fare, by the meter, is approximately $39.

Please check the Gypsy Lore Society web site prior to your departure to the meetings for any significant change in the airport shuttle situation.

REGISTRATION

Registration fees are $25 for members, $30 for non-members. All participants are urged to pre-register if possible. Send checks (payable to the Gypsy Lore Society) or credit card information to the treasurer:

HOUSING

We suggest one of the following options. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Make your reservations directly with the hotel of your choice.

The Inn at The League
The most convenient would be to stay at The League itself, though rooms here are more expensive than either of the other options. Rates are $115 for singles, $10 for an additional person, or $220 for two-person suites, $15 for an additional person. Complimentary parking and breakfast. We could not arrange for rooms to be set aside for conference participants, but as of this writing there were smoking, non-smoking, and wheelchair accessible rooms available. For reservations, call 734-764-3177, or fax 734-763-6844.

Microtel Inn (3610 Plymouth Road)
This is our least expensive option. Rooms are small but nice in a newly built hotel on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, about four miles from The League. Microtel is a less expensive affiliate of the better-known Holiday Inn. Rates are singles (1 queen-size bed) at $52, or doubles (2 queen-sized beds) at $62. Note that these are room prices, regardless of how many guests sleep in the rooms. Complimentary breakfast and 24 hour coffee. The Inn provides a complimentary shuttle to and from The League and other sites in Ann Arbor. (Note: Even those arriving by car may find it advantageous to take the shuttle due to the difficulties and expense of parking near the university.) Shuttles from the airport will take you directly to Microtel if you so request. If arriving by car, take exit 41 from US 23, turn west on Plymouth Road and immediately turn left into the Holiday Inn/Microtel parking lot. For reservations, call 734-997-9100 or fax 734-997-9012. A block of rooms has been set aside for the Gypsy Lore Society until April 30. Be sure to say you are attending the Gypsy Lore Society conference when making your reservations. After April 30, rooms may still be obtained on an availability basis, although these may not be located within the area set aside for the Gypsy Lore Society.

Holiday Inn (3600 Plymouth Road)
The Ann Arbor Microtel is located immediately adjacent to the Holiday Inn, which will provide a "university rate" (be sure to specifically request this) for those who would like a larger, better-appointed room. The university rate is $85. There is an indoor/outdoor pool, a whirlpool and free high-speed internet access in all guest rooms. The same shuttle service as for Microtel provides transportation to The League and elsewhere in Ann Arbor. Call 1-800-800-5560 for reservations.

Cambridge House (541 Thompson)
Cambridge House is a graduate student dormitory. Rooms have a private bath and are clean but otherwise rather spartan and utilitarian. Rates are singles at $66 and doubles at $77. They are located on central campus, 5-10 minutes walk from The League. Cambridge House is located in West Quad, immediately west of the Michigan Union. The registration desk is in Room 125 on the first floor. To get there, enter the Michigan Union either through the front entrance on State Street, proceeding to the left rear corner of the Union or through the side entrance from Madison Street and take the stairs or elevator up one floor. Signs will direct you to Room 125. If arriving after 10:00 p.m., guests must use the Madison Street door, using the red phone outside the door to gain entry. Instructions will be posted next to the phone. Please note that Cambridge House guests are not allowed to enter through the West Quad doors facing Thompson Street. A block of rooms will be reserved for conference participants until April 30, but you may be able to obtain a room if still available after that date. Make your reservation by calling 734-764-5297 or fax 734-764-1557. Don't forget to tell them that you are with the Gypsy Lore Society. A university parking structure is located on Thompson Street directly across from West Quad. A parking permit can be purchased at the registration desk for $8. Metered parking is available along State, Madison and Thompson Streets. Cambridge House suggests parking on the street while you checking in and purchase your parking permit, then moving your car to the parking structure.
