THE GYPSY LORE SOCIETY 2004 ANNUAL MEETING The Gypsy Lore Society annual meeting and conference on Gypsy Studies will be held on September 3rd and 4th, 2004, at the Great Hall, Henderson Hall, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK. Papers on any aspect of Romani/Gypsy studies are most welcome, but substantive papers addressing the theme, "Transformations in Romani/Gypsy Society: Past, Present, Future," will be given priority. Papers from political scientists and historians as well as methodologists who are examining the politics and ethics of the "researcher/researched" relationship in Romani/Gypsy studies are encouraged. It is envisaged that a selection of papers from the conference will be published. Please send short abstracts (about 100 words) to the program chair, Dr. Colin Clark.
Submissions, preferably by e mail and attachment, should also include the author's name, address, daytime telephone and fax
numbers and e mail address. Deadline for receipt of abstracts is April 30, 2004. Address inquiries to: Henderson Hall, incorporating the Grade II listed "Old Hall" complex, is situated in large, attractive grounds, in a residential area, approximately three miles north east of the city center and main University campus. The original Hall was opened in 1932 with additional wings added in the early 1960s and late 1970s. The Great Hall, where the main sessions for the conference will take place, is a large, wood paneled hall, seating up to 200 people. There is a full range of audio visual facilities available. Henderson Hall has a separate dining room which also seats up to 200 and opens into a large reception area and the gardens. There is also a comfortable Lounge Bar with television. Registration Registration fees for the two day conference are $35 for Gypsy Lore Society members and
for postgraduate students; $50 for non members. For those able to attend only one of the conference days, the fees are
$15 per day for Gypsy Lore Society members and for postgraduate students, $25 for non members. Postgraduate students are
defined as those registered either part time or full time for an MA or PhD degree at a university. Status will need to be
confirmed with a letter from the university or dissertation supervisor with an official stamp signature. Send checks in US

The deadline for registration is July 1, 2004. **NEW HOUSING REGISTRATION PROCESS** It is recommended that meeting participants stay on site at Henderson Hall. Not only is this very convenient for attending the conference venue (the Great Hall is on the grounds of Henderson Hall) but it is also very competitively priced. Henderson Hall offers two standards of accommodation for participants in the form of single study bedrooms, all of which are centrally heated. Within the Old Hall complex are 88 rooms with en suite facilities (i.e., bathroom/shower facilities). The remaining standard rooms have only washbasins. These rooms are serviced by ample shower and toilet facilities in the residence. You must book your room and pay in advance. The balance will be due when you register in Newcastle. Transportation Henderson Hall is located off A 1058 on the east side of Newcastle upon Tyne Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Sheet No 88. By Air: Planes from London and other British and European cities fly into Newcastle International Airport. The airport is located a few miles north of the city and is easily accessible by road (A696) and train (Metro link directly to heart of city.) Bus services and taxis also travel frequently between the city and the airport. We recommend that you take a taxi direct to Henderson Hall; the fare is about £15 to £20. Leave A1 northbound by sliproad signposted Wideopen/Killingworth, A1056, to approach 3 roundabouts in quick succession. At first roundabout take 2nd exit A1056. At next roundabout take first exit A1056. Next roundabout take 2nd exit A1056. Follow A1056 (Sandy Lane) to next roundabout. Take 4th exit A189 signposted Newcastle. **Continue to next roundabout (Peter Barrett Garden Centre on RHS), where you take 2nd exit signposted A188 Newcastle East (Nestle's factory on RHS). Carry on straight over the next two roundabouts and a third (mini) roundabout. The distance over the last 3 roundabouts is about 1.1 miles Four Lane Ends. You should see the Metro Station on your left. Carry on over across junction. Carry on for about a further 1.1 miles, passing on your right the Newton Park Pub. Cross over mini roundabout. On your left are 2 filling stations and a Safeway Superstore. Turn left at Peugeot Garage into Etherstone Avenue. Straight down to the end of this road. Turn left into Redhall Drive and Henderson Hall vehicle access is first turning on the left. Alternative Route from the South: Using the A19 through the Tyne Tunnel. On leaving the Tyne Tunnel filter left from roundabout signposted Morpeth (A1)/Tynemouth. Continue along A19 to next roundabout. Take first exit signposted A1058 Newcastle. Continue on A1058 until you pass under a railway bridge, filter left, (signposted Walker) and turn right at traffic lights. Henderson Hall is two tenths of a mile up on the left side.
