THE GYPSY LORE SOCIETY 2005 ANNUAL MEETING The 2005 Annual Meeting and Conference on Gypsy Studies will be held September 9-10, at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the Universidad de Granada, Spain. The Facultad de Filosofía y Letras is located on the Campus de Cartuja, about a mile northwest from the center of the city. You will find a map here. The meeting coordinator is Juan F. Gamella, Departamento de Antropología Social, Universidad de Granada. The local arrangements coordinator is Elisa Martín. Papers on any aspect of Romani and Gypsy Studies are welcome but substantive papers will be given priority. Papers on Roma migrations, historical demography, population studies, masculinity and health-related issues are especially welcome. Please send short abstracts (about 100 words) to the program chair, Dr. Juan Gamella. Submissions, preferably by e-mail and attachment, should also include the author's name, address, daytime telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address. luxuriant hill, among numerous forests and springs. Opposite the Alhambra stands the Albaicín—the Old Moorish quarter of narrow streets and "carmens"

Granada and its province, visit these web sites: Registration Registration fees for the two day conference are $40 (i30) for Gypsy Lore Society members and postgraduate students and $55 (i40) for nonmembers. For those able to attend only one of the conference days, the fees are $20 (i15) per day for Gypsy Lore Society members and postgraduate students and $30 (i20) for nonmembers. Postgraduate students need to be registered either part-time or full-time for an MA or PhD degree at a university, and must prove their status with a letter from the university or their dissertation supervisor. selected hotels and hostels in Granada: Carmen de la Victoria The local arrangements coordinator has reserved the 15 rooms of the Carmen de la Victoria, a hotel owned by the Universidad de Granada in the most beautiful part of the Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter located on the hill facing the Alhambra and about a mile from the meeting site. Single rooms are i50.00 and double rooms i65.00. All meals are included. For reservations, send your details by email to Elisa Martin. The first to reserve will be first served. The local arrangements coordinator is negotiating with other hotels for special deals for meeting participants. Further information on this will be posted on this web site as it is available. Transportation Getting to Granada By air: Granada's airport is not international. If you want to come by air you will have to fly from Madrid (45 minutes) or Barcelona (1 hour). There are two or three daily flights to and from Madrid and Barcelona (see http://www.iberia.es). Granada airport is located about 15 kilometers west of the city near the town of Santa Fé. There is a bus service to and from the central district of the city. Bus fare is i2.50. Ask the bus driver for the nearest stop to your hotel. Taxi fare by the meter is approximately i20. Getting to Granada from Malaga: Malaga is the nearest international airport. If you are flying from within Europe there are many cheap charter flights to Malaga. To get from Malaga to Granada (about 120 km) you will have to take a bus or rent a car. First you get a bus or a taxi from the airport to the Malaga bus station, and from here another to Granada. There is a bus every hour from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. (except 8:00 p.m.). The price is about i8. It takes 90 minutes. Be careful if you fly late, as you will have to spend the night in Malaga or rent a car. There are many car rentals in Malaga's airport. By train: There are two daily trains to and from Madrid. One is in the morning and another is in the afternoon. Return fare is about i75. Granada is not on a high-speed line, so it will take you six hours. The train from Barcelona takes about ten hours. If you love trains, you can get from London to Granada in about 22 hours! There is a sleeper train from Paris to Madrid. The train station is centrally located. The phone number is 958 27 12 72. (See http://www.renfe.es.) By bus: There are several buses each day to and from the other large Spanish cities, such as Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. If you are coming from Madrid you will need to go to "Estación del sur". The buses leave about every hour. It takes about five hours from Madrid to Granada and costs around i13. Granada's bus station is slightly out of town. To get into the city from the bus station it is best to get a taxi. Getting around Granada There are two bus lines, line U and line 8, that go to the University Campus of Cartuja. From the central Plaza del Triunfo the bus takes around 15 minutes. There are many taxi ranks in Granada. Taxi fare by the meter is usually less than i6 from most hotels to the Campus de Cartuja. To get a taxi within Granada, phone 958 28 06 54. The taxi rarely takes more than 10 minutes to arrive. Banquet The traditional banquet will be held on Saturday, September 10, at the Gardens of the Carmen de la Victoria, in the Albaicín. The price of the banquet is $35 (i25), including service and all beverages. Other meals are on your own. The Facultad de Filosofía y Letras has a restaurant and cafeteria service for snacks on Friday and Saturday. A special price lunch will be offered both days to meeting participants. Leisure activities The local arrangements coordinator is preparing a nocturnal visit to the Alhambra on Friday, and a flamenco festival of music and dance in the Albaicín or Sacromonte on Saturday night.
