THE GYPSY LORE SOCIETY

2008 ANNUAL MEETING

The 2008 Annual Meeting and Conference will be held August 28 through 30 at the Georgetown University Conference Hotel, Washington, DC.

Call for Papers

Papers on any aspect of Gypsy or Traveler Studies are welcome; substantive papers based on original research will be given priority. Please send abstracts of up to 100 words to program coordinator Matt T. Salo, 5607 Greenleaf Rd., Cheverly, MD, USA. Submissions must include name of author, address, daytime telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address. Deadline for abstracts is April 30, 2008. Address inquiries to Matt T. Conference Venue

The conference will be held at the Georgetown University Conference Center, 3800 Reservoir Rd NW, Washington, DC 20057. The Conference Center is on the campus of Georgetown University, in the heart of Georgetown, an historic district in Washington and a lively cultural area. The Conference Center is also convenient to the museums and monuments of downtown Washington. The Georgetown University Conference Center is located in Leavey Center, which is marked number 22 on campus maps at http://explore.georgetown.edu.

A note to the frugal: With the dollar low, this may be a good year for the world to attend a US conference.

Registration

Meeting registration fees are US$50 for Gypsy Lore Society members and for postgraduate students; and US$60 for nonmembers. To be eligible for these prices, your fees must reach us by 30 June 2008. The late registration fee (after 30 June 2008 ) is US$70 for both members and nonmembers.

Participants registering at the conference venue on the day of the conference will be asked to pay the late registration fee, in cash, US$70.

Postgraduate students are those registered either part time or full time for an MA or PhD degree at a university, and must prove their status with a letter from the university or dissertation supervisor.

Banquet

The traditional banquet will be held Saturday, August 30. The banquet fee is US$50. Use the registration form to book your place at the banquet as well.

Cancellation

If you must cancel your participation in the meeting, the Gypsy Lore Society will refund your fees paid for registration and banquet, if cancellation is received by e-mail or fax by 31 July 2008. After 31 July 2008, registrants are no longer eligible for refunds or credits. A processing fee of US$10 is applied against all fees refunded.

Housing

Housing has been reserved at the Conference Center hotel for Thursday, August 28 through Saturday, August 30. Both single and double rooms are $109 per night, plus taxes. You may also reserve your room on the hotel web site. Enter GLSSLSA in the box marked "corporate/promotional code." To reserve your room by telephone or fax, indicate the conference name ("Gypsy Lore Society Conference"), the dates you will be staying, the type of room you want, and your credit card information to guarantee your room. Make your room reservations as soon as possible. You must make your reservations by 31 July 2008.

Meals

You will have the opportunity to eat at several restaurants within the conference center, or to explore Georgetown's many ethnic and other restaurants.

Transportation

By air

Washington, DC is served by three airports: Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA); Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), southwest of the city; and Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI), northeast of the city. National Airport is most convenient for domestic flights, Dulles for international flights.

There is direct Metrorail (subway) service into Washington from Reagan National Airport. There are walkways to the Metro station from Terminals B and C. Free shuttle buses run from Terminal A to the Metro station. You can take the Metro Blue Line toward "Vienna-Fairfax-GMU," getting off at the Rosslyn Metro station. From the Rosslyn Metro station you can board the campus shuttle bus to the conference hotel. Alternatively, you can take the Yellow Line toward "Fort Totten," change at Gallery Place/Chinatown to the Red Line toward "Shady Grove," and get off at Dupont Circle Station. Then board the campus shuttle bus to the conference hotel.

SuperShuttle door-to-door service is available at the Airport. Shuttles operate on a shared ride-on-demand basis. For information, call 1-800-BLUEVAN or go to http://www.supershuttle.com. Upon arrival proceed to the outside curb and contact the SuperShuttle representative. After hours, call 1-800-258-3826 and press 1 for dispatch or 2 for reservations.

Metrobus operates an express bus service, route 5A, between Dulles International Airport and Washington, DC, making a stop at Rosslyn Metro station on the Orange Line. The fare is $3.00. At Dulles, the Metrobus stops at the Ground Transportation Curb (Arrivals level, down the ramp) at curb location 2E. The route map and timetable are available from Metro's website. From the Rosslyn Metro station you can board the campus shuttle bus to the conference hotel.

From Dulles International Airport you can also take the Washington Flyer bus to the West Falls Church Station of the Orange Line of Metrorail. The fare is $9 one way or $16 round trip. See http://www.washfly.com.

SuperShuttle's door-to-door shared ride van service is available to and from Washington Dulles International Airport. SuperShuttle ticket counters are located on the far ends of the Ground Transportation Level of the Main Terminal. Shuttles operate on an on-demand basis. No reservations are needed for outbound service from the Airport. For information or inbound reservations to the Airport, call 1-800-BLUEVAN or go to http://www.supershuttle.com.

By train

The AMTRAK terminal in Washington is Union Station. At the station board the Metro Red Line toward "Shady Grove," and get off at Dupont Circle Station. Then board the campus shuttle bus to the conference hotel.

Bus and Metro

The Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS) connects the campus to the to Metro stations at Rosslyn (Orange Line) and Dupont Circle (Red Line). Visitors and persons doing business on campus may also ride free of charge and must show a picture ID at the time of boarding. GUTS buses depart and arrive at the Leavey Center. Buses operate between 5 a.m. and 12 midnight; they run infrequently on weekends. Schedules and maps at http://otm.georgetown.edu/guts.

The University is also served by the G-2, D-2 and D-4 Metrobus routes. The closest Metrorail stops are Rosslyn on the Blue/Orange Line and Dupont Circle on the Red Line.

By car

The hotel does not allow smoking. Smoking will be permitted outside in special designated areas.

The Gypsy Lore Society cannot offer financial support for registration, transportation, housing, or meals.

Future Meetings

The 2009 meeting is scheduled to be held in Helsinki, Finland; the 2010 meeting, in Lisbon, Portugal. The Gypsy Lore Society is fortunate to have offers for future meetings in Glasgow, Scotland; Graz, Austria; and Prague, Czech Republic. Those in a position to organize a future meeting in the US are encouraged to contact Matt T Salo.
